Independence Through Initiative »

Divorce is one of the greatest hardships that an individual will face. The Americans for Divorce Reform estimates that 40, possibly 50, percent of marriages will end in divorce. Each individual must learn a new way of doing things after a divorce, and will often take on new responsibilities. The Center for Work Life Policy reports that 60% of working women will step backĀ from their careers or leave the workforce completely, upon getting married. Divorce often results in those women returning to the workforce.

A divorce may bring drastic changes to an individual’s financial situation. In single income families, an income that once supported one household now has to support two households. According to a study by the U.S. Census Bureau, about one-quarter (24.6 percent) of custodial parents and their children had 2007 incomes below the poverty level, which is about twice as high as the overall population (12.5 percent). The financial strain of divorce can be alleviated or lessened by the non-working spouse returning to the workforce, however, re-entering the job market after a long absence is often overwhelming. With the help of Vocational Services Unlimited, it can be a much less daunting experience.

Vocational Services Unlimited’s Independence through Initiative program will provide the client with the necessary post-divorce employment transition services to assist with achieving financial independence. Vocational Services Unlimited aims to provide clients with a newly found sense of self-worth, and the skills and opportunities necessary to obtain and maintain gainful employment for years to come.

VSU expects the client’s post-divorce dependence on alimony and other state/federal assistance programs to be reduced as a result of utilizing our vocational services. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, overall, rising employment rates of custodial parents were accompanied by declines in rates of participation in public assistance programs, which fell from 40.7 percent to 31.5 percent between 1993 and 2007.
